Herb Description

Ashwagandha ( Withania somnifera ), is a shrub cultivated in India, Pakistan , and Sri Lanka & it roots have been used for thousands of years by Ayurvedic practitioners ,also known as Indian ginseng . Ashwagandha belongs to Solanaceae or nightshade family.

Ashwagandha, a traditional Indian (Ayurvedic) medical herb thought of as “Indian ginseng.” used for stress, arthritis, and many other conditions .It matures as a stout shrub that grows a height of 170 cm.

Ashwagandha have red fruit & yellow blossoms , though its fruit is berry -like in shape & size.All the common parts of this plant such as berries, fruits & roots have been used traditionally.

Ashwagandha is promoted for numerous uses. It is used to heighten immune systems and as a rejuvenator, aphrodisiac, and tonic for general health.

It is marketed as a remedy for numerous compelx disease such as cancers, multiple sclerosis and AIDS. It is often employed as a hypnotic & antiarthritic for self-therapy. Historically ashwagandha root has also been reported to have sex-enhancing actions.

Uses and Benefits

In traditional Asian therapies, ashwagandha has been used for various cases to treate stress related disorders. Being an energy tonic like ginseng or bastard ginseng for instance, is uniquely more efficacious for soothing the mind, easing arthritis and building sexual power.

A main traditional use of the plant is in “balancing life forces,” which may be believed as an adaptogenic or anti-stress tonic effect. Thus, ashwagandha is reasoned to be a general booster of health & enhaence rejuvenation according to traditional Ayurvedic practice.

Its anti-inflammatory effects have led to use in liver disease, tuber­culosis, rheumatic disorders, and skin problems. this herbs reputation has expanded its repertory to include treatment for stress, weakness, sexual debility, aging symplams, and anemia, among many other conditions.

It is believed to be efficacious to treat infections, generally those caused by fungi. Side Effects

Liquid preparations made by this product may include sugar and/or alcohol. Caution is recommended if individual have diabetes, alcohol dependence or liver disease.

Ashwagandha is not prescribed for use during pregnancy . Tell to doctor before using this product. Because of potential risk to the infant, breast-feeding while using this product is not prescribed.

Drug Interactions

Natural, Herbal and Home Remedies for the Treatment of Acidity

Basil Leaves: Chew a few basil ( tulsi ) leaves to get relief from burning, nausea and gas (main symptoms of acidity).

Sleep with your head and shoulder on a high pillow for elevation. This will help in getting acidity away.

Clove: Take one piece of clove and suck it slowly.

Milk Products: Consumption of milk and other milk products is also very good for curing acidity.

Maintain Upright Posture: Maintaining an upright posture for some time after taking food, this will help in preventing reflex.

Harad – Chewing a piece of harad also helps in curing acidity fast.

Apple Cider Vinegar – Take a mixture of 2 tsp of natural apple cider vinegar and mix it with 2 tsp of raw honey in a glass of water before meals. This remedy is very good for persons suffering from acidity.

Lemon Juice: The juice from lemons introduced to your body causes it to become alkaline. Drink water everyday with lemons squeezed in it to get rid of acidity completely.

For Advanced Stage of Acidity: Those in an advanced state of acidity should be kept on only milk or some other milk products and fruits. Milk also should be given in limited quantities of about 250 to 300 milliliters-every hour. Person suffering should not be given any leafy vegetables as they may even worsen the condition.

Fruits: The fruits like watermelon, banana and cucumber are very good for persons suffering from acidity.

Tulsi, Neem, Black Pepper and Peepal – Take a dried blossom of tulsi, rind of the neem tree, black pepper and peepal in even quantity and then grind them nicely to make a powdered form. The suffering person may be given 3 gms of this powder daily as a first thing in the morning and in the evening with plain water. This remedy will help in getting rid of all the acid (the main cause of acidity) from the body in the form of urine and sweat. But remember, never to take milk over tulsi leaves which might afflict your skin.

Chebulic Myroblan: Drinking daily 1 tsp juice of chebulic myroblan mixed with 1 tsp of amla (Indian gooseberry) juice is an age old remedy for the treatment of acidity.

Unripe Foods: Unripe foods with high pectin content should also be avoided as they may worsen the condition.

Almonds – Almonds are also very effective in relieving acidity from its root. You may take 5-6 almonds daily till the symptoms of acidity persist.

Vanilla Ice Cream: Eat a cup of vanilla ice cream or drink a glass of cold milk to get heartburn and acidity relief within minutes.

Cabbage Juice: Cabbage juice is another remedy which helps in preventing acidity from occurring.

Jaggery: Keep a small piece of jaggery (gur) in your mouth and slowly suck it. Repeat it every hour till acidity subsides.

White Vinegar: Intake of 1-2 tablespoons of white vinegar also provides relief from acidity.

Home Remedies for Curing Cold and Cough

Some of the Common Home Remedies for Curing Cold and Cough are:

Carrom Seeds – A tablespoon of carom seeds crushed and tied up in a muslin cloth can be used for inhalation to relieve congestion/blocked nose.

Lemon – Lemon is so effective remedy for curing cold and cough that now a saying has been developed that half a lemon a day keeps the cold away. For a bad cold, the juice of one full lemons in a litre of boiling water sweetened with honey, taken at bed time, is a very effective remedy.

Turmeric Powder – Turmeric powder mixed in warm milk is a very effective home remedy for cold and cough. Take one teaspoon of of turmeric powder and mixed in one cup of warm milk.

Raisins – A sauce prepared from raisins is also useful in a cough. This sauce is prepared by grinding 100 gm of raisins with water. About 100 gm of sugar should be mixed with it and the mixture heated. When the mixture acquires a sauce-like consistency, it should be preserved. Twenty grams should be taken at bedtime daily.

Ginger – In cases of dry cough (especially during the night), peel a small piece of fresh ginger. Sprinkle some salt on it and chew.

Tamarind (imli) and Pepper (Kali Mirch) – This is a an effective remedy used in South India for centuries. Dilute 50 grams of tamarind in 250 ml of water. Add half a teaspoon of pepper powder and a teaspoon of ghee. Boil it for a few minutes and inhale the vapours of this steaming mixture thrice a day to clear the nasal blockage during colds.

Bitter Gourd Plant – The roots of the bitter gourd plant are used in folk medicine to cure a cold. A teaspoon of the root paste, mixed with an equal quantity of honey or tulsi leaf juice, given once every night for a month, acts as an excellent medicine for colds.

Aniseed – Aniseed is another effective remedy for a hard dry cough with difficult expectoration. It breaks up the mucus. A tea made from this spice should be taken regularly for treating this condition.

Almonds – Almonds are another very effective home remedy used from past many years for curing cold and cough. Soak 6-7 almonds overnight. Remove the brown skin nixt morning. Make a paste of these almonds with little butter and sugar. Very useful for a dry cough.
